Resident Engineer
Resident engineer is the engineer’s representative who is responsible for supervising the projects and making sure the process is going according to plan as well as the requirements of the contract such as quality, cost and time. Resident engineers are also responsible for making sure the project is carried out according to safety regulations.
The resident engineer reports to the project engineer and the contractor while also being the key communicator between the two parties. The responsibilities of a resident engineer are usually assigned by the project engineer, however, these responsibilities typically involve monitoring the project from its construction phase to its completion, determining the best engineering method, estimating the cost of the project and the time to complete it, informing the project engineer of any updates, recording details that may have an effect on the project engineer’s instructions. Clients, on the other hand, need to discuss with the project engineer before giving any instruction to the resident engineer.
Other than supervising the process of the project itself, resident engineers are also responsible for supervising the staff and report to the contractor or manager. Resident engineers are expected to make sure the staff is trained properly and safety gears are available and used properly. If the staff comes across a problem, the resident engineer is also expected to evaluate the issue and find a solution accordingly.
